The interior of the AZ-1 is intimate, with bucket seat and a highly legible instrument panel. At the same time, the large glass canopy-like roof ensures a feeling of openness. The gull-wing doors permit closer parking quarters. The two-tone exterior of Mazda's minicar is offers in either Classic Red or Siberian Blue combined with a Venetian Gray Lower Body. The primary interior color is black, while the seats are coordinated with a central strip of either red of blue to match the exterior color. In addition to the fundamental safety features, such as a high-mount stopn light and side impact bars, the AZ-1 incorporates an ample crush zone, a sturdy upper body structure, an impact-absorbing steering wheel and large side sills, all of which contribute to enhanced safety. The innovative use of plastic panels not only allowed ahigh level of design flexibility, but also contributed to light weight and the AZ-1's resistance to corrosion. The AZ-1 was also designed with consideration for the environment. All plastic parts weighing more than 100 grams, including the outer panels, are marked with an ISO-based, internationally accepted plastic identification code to facilitate recycling efforts. the brake pads and engine gaskets are asbestos-free.

The AZ-1 is introduced September 1992 and sold through the Autozam dealer network in Japan. Mazda projectes sales of the turbocharged minicar at 800 units per month! There are no plans to sell the AZ-1 outside Japan.
