Powering the rear wheels of the AZ-1 is a turbocharged three-cylinder, 12 valve 660cc engine with electronic fuel injection that develops approximately 64 horsepower at 6.500rpm and 63 lbs-ft of torque at 4.000 rpm. This engine provides the AZ-1 with ample torque at low revs and superb performance as it approaches its 9.000 rpm redline. Mounted behind the cabin, it helps the AZ-1 achieve a near-ideal weight distribution of 44:56. The AZ-1 is equipped with a five-speed gearbox and a fully independent suspension. Front and rear wheels are outfitted with struts to enhance ride quality. The large-diameter front stabilizer and front shock tower bar provide additional rigidity for improved cornering perfomance. The rack-and pinion steering, with a lock-to-lock of 2.2 turns allows quick and firm handling with excellent feel, The four-wheel disc brakes are power-assisted, providing reliable braking performance. A four-wheel antilock braking system is available as an option. Special 155/65R12 73H tires were developed for the AZ-1 to reduce unsprung weight. These tires come mounted on 13x5-inche steel wheels or optional lightweight aluminum alloy wheels.
